Burlington Coat is continuing their LP organizational development and actually adding an additional Territorial Director and 10 more Regional Loss Prevention Managers.  Jim Connolly, Sr. VP of Asset Protection, who joined the company last year started with 2 Directors of Loss Prevention and 12 Field Loss Prevention Managers.  Now with this additional staffing, Burlington Coat will have 5 Territorial Loss Prevention Directors and 30 Regional Loss Prevention Managers.  This is great growth for the industry and certainly will increase quality and service to Burlington's stores.  With all of the job eliminations over the last few years, it's great to see one expanding.

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) announces it sent notices of inspection to 1,000 employers in the U.S. and warning that agents will be auditing their hiring records of employees.  With last year's Abercrombie & Fitch fine, retailers should be ensuring that each stores records and I9 forms are up to date.  (Source wwlp.com)

Massive ORC shoplifting ring arrested in Miami after selling over $150,000 of stolen merchandise (1,400 items) on eBay.  The ring hit on average 4 stores a night and store the merchandise in their own warehouse.  They'd make a legit purchase, obtain a receipt and other ring members would go back in the store selecting similar merchandise flashing the receipt as if they had purchased the merchandise.   Then selling it on eBay under the name Nancy Outerino. "Shoplifting for hire" ring leader in Alliance, OH is indicted on a second felony charge after being arrested last week.  Her $50 flat rate for each customer kept her and her accomplice busy during the holidays with more than 25 Christmas wish lists in her possession when she was apprehended.  (Source the-review.com)

Family Dollar confirms it received an unsolicited offer from the Trian Group to acquire the company.  (Source stpetersburgnews.com)

Credit card fraud ring of 5 busted in Santa Barbara County, CA with the card-making machinery.  (Source santabmariatimes.com)

Yesterday, the Medical Fraud Task Force brought criminal charges on 111 doctors, nurses, and health care company executives in what officials described as the nation's "largest-ever federal healthcare fraud takedown" and valued at $225 million. (Source latimes.com)

Twenty years ago, Canada had 20 U.S. retailers up there and soon it'll be over 200 and one analyst says that 50% of the retail landscape in Canada is now foreign controlled and expects it to grow to 70% by 2015.  The press is calling it the "American retail invasion" and Canadian retailers may be worried.  This is a great article about the subject.  (Source canadianbusiness.com)

Canada's copyright reform legislation, Bill C-32, which was introduced last June continues to "rage" in legislative committee and their reputation as a piracy haven is having an impact.  Being viewed as "a major source of the world's piracy problem," Industry Minister Tony Clement said the new bill will target "wealth destroyers."  (Source thestar.com)

Grocery prices are predicted to increase 5% to 10% over the next year.  (Source torontosun.com)

Here's an interesting one that should cause concern:  The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (the "industry cop" ) fined Lincoln Financial Securities $600,000 for allowing employees to use shared usernames and passwords to access 1,000,000 customer records from any web browser on any network.  While retailers aren't as controlled or monitored and don't posses such detailed financial information, we still have customer records that warrant protection and control.  And as is the case with all working groups, people have a tendency to become lackadaisical about logon and password information.  Ensuring that this doesn't happen is every managers responsibility.  (Source Associated Press)

Fast Company Magazine Recognizes eBay’s Innovation

eBay was recognized as one of the world's most innovative companies in a recent article with Fast Company Magazine. After what eBay has done over the past 12 months, it's time to stop thinking of the company just as, well, whatever you've been thinking of it as: auction site; Internet stock monster; Meg Whitman launching pad. The new eBay is mobile, mainstream, and fashionable. For starters, eBay has made good on its promise to move aggressively into the mobile-commerce space. "We want consumers to engage even when they don't have a purchase in mind," says Steve Yankovich, eBay's VP of mobile platforms. The results have redefined the brand. The company sold almost $2 billion worth of goods via smart phones and tab-lets in 2010, more than double the total sales from 2009. Click here for full article.

With review time approaching, it may be wise to do a critical and realistic self-review in preparation.  While most of us are fully aware of our own positive and negative attributes, it's human nature to minimize and rationalize.  Taking the time to do it in actuality not only prepares you for the review, but it'll force you to surface all the issues of the last year and rethink them.  This process alone can have multiple benefits.  From developing strategies for individual objectives, to creating a proactive response to your review itself, to actually changing your priorities and maybe even your focus.  Very few take the review process as seriously as they should whether it be corporate America or the executive themselves.  But as all the studies, psychologists, and human resource executives will tell you, it is a defining moment for an executive and an individual and getting prepared for it will help you.

Just a Thought
