Last Friday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) announced the expansion of its Organized Retail Crime Pilot Program into an ongoing, national initiative which will be known as the SEARCH initiative (Seizing Earnings and Assets from Retail Crime Heists).  The Organized Retail Crime Pilot Program (ORCP), which launched on July 6, 2009, in Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and New York, focused on building partnerships with the retail industry and developing a series of tools to assist law enforcement in threat assessments, case tracking and most significantly, an in-depth analysis of how organized crime rings are exploiting systemic vulnerabilities in the banking system to launder their profits.  As of February 2011, more than 83 criminal HSI cases have been linked to the ORCP. These cases have resulted in 38 criminal arrests, 29 indictments, 14 convictions, 237 seizures, the execution of 18 search warrants, and 15 administrative arrests. These cases have also led to the seizure of nearly $4.9 million in cash, property, and monetary instruments.  (Source nrf.com)

On premise, crimes have been increasing for the jewelry industry worldwide with nearly $73 million lost in 2009 and incidents of theft, burglary and robbery are up as well.  Within each category, the Jewelers Security Alliance cites 42% of thefts are "grab-and-runs" with sneak distraction crimes at 25%.  65% of burglaries are 3-minute jobs with 3/4 of robberies committed with a gun and typically between 11 am and noon and 5 and 6 pm.  Some huge cases over the years in this article.  Thanks to John Mearls of eBay for sending us this article.  (Source worldone-journal.com)

Canada has more people per capita engaging in illegal file sharing than any other country and Hollywood is pressuring Obama to push Canada's Prime Minister to strengthen its intellectual-property rights and pass new legislation that Canada has been debating for the last six years.  Their "wild west" reputation is also impacting the current Canada-European Union trade negotiations as well and all because of copyright concerns.  Maybe now they'll do something about it.  (Source nationalpost.com)

Dave Hogan, the NRF's CIO and senior vice president of retail operations, to whom their Loss Prevention team reported, is leaving the association.  Still without a vice president of Loss Prevention, the NRF is relying heavily on their current team and their senior advisor Joe LaRocca. Bob Serenson, Senior Director of Asset Protection for Wal-Mart, has agreed to sit on the Thought Challenge Awards Committee for the D&D Daily and finishes the committee selection.  Committee members from around the U.S. will review each Thought Challenge in December to determine the top three published Thought Challenges.  To learn more about how you can enter this Awards program, visit www.d-ddaily.com and write your Thought Challenge!

ALPHA innovation is making the best better.

ALPHA, the global leader in high theft solutions, is proud to announce the launch of Nano Gate, a small gate that offers big protection. Nano Gate is an innovative, flexible, small security gate that can be easily installed in "unprotected zones" within a store where thieves can hide and attempt to remove security devices. Nano Gate works exclusively with Alpha's 3*Alarm technology extending their reach and enhancing their value as a robust high-theft security solution.

Nano Gate is simple to install -- 6 screws and plug-n-play. Aesthetically pleasing design, Nano Gate requires no wires, no tuning, no service contracts, and comes with a battery back-up option. Nano Gate triggers Alpha's 3*Alarm technology, preventing thieves from taking retailer's high-risk merchandise into restrooms, emergency exits, elevators, fitting rooms, and any other place you want to prevent the merchandise to go within the store.

Nano Gate is another significant addition to Alpha’s rich history of innovation. Nano Gate is the first high-theft security device to provide targeted protection within a store. For more information, please visit www.alphaworld.com/nanogate.

The "power of the pen" is a phrase carried down thru generations and rightfully so.  The ability to write your thoughts, to express your beliefs, your opinions is incredibly important and can have a significant impact on your career.  Developing the ability to communicate in written form can make the difference in how far an executive goes and it also gives one the ability to go as far as they want as long as they're willing to risk it and put it out there so to speak.  I've always tried to write as if one person is sitting in front of me and I'm just trying to communicate to that person.  While many are reluctant to write, the one thing you merely need to keep in mind is write as if you're speaking to merely one person and don't hold back.  Our Thought Challenge column was developed to offer everyone that opportunity.  To be able to share a thought an opinion or an idea with your colleagues and this year we added the Awards program as a way to hopefully inspire thought and motivate people to share.  Our Awards Committee is comprised of some of the best leaders in the industry and they're excited about this program and look forward to reading your Thought Challenges.  Who knows what ideas may come out.  My only suggestion is take the risk - stir the pot - and share your thoughts!

Write your Thought Challenge and see what happens!
