"It might be the start of the end" for Borders according to Al Greco, a marketing professor at Fordham University's Graduate School of Business in New York who follows the book industry.  Borders is trying to turn the first round of missed payments to publishers in December into a loan.  And this comes from the local newspaper in their own backyard.  (Source detnews.com)

1-Tag, the new anti-counterfeiting application that allows shoppers to validate whether a product is legitimate.  Shoppers capture the bar code and the app. decodes the information.  Applied during final manufacturing, the owner has full control over the information content and production numbers.  Using a standard mobile phone, merchandise can be verified at every stage of distribution and all the way thru to the consumer.  This is the first anti-counterfeiting tool that uses a "secret code placed on the label" that "only governments have the resources" to hack and the first one to not require the person to enter numbers into a database and confirm online.  (Source adage.com)

The new backdoor is your networked printer that's in use, not the ones you're getting rid of, but the ones you're using right now with hackers using a program called "Praeda" (Latin for plunder) that works by exploiting common security flaws such as default passwords left unchanged from the manufacturer.  Once in, the program is deployed to steal passwords and files or take control of devices connected to the same network.  Developed by an independent researcher legitimately to determine weaknesses, the hackers have taken control of it and are using it worldwide to get in the back door.  (Source msn.com)

Sales at the Top 25 food retailers in North America for 2010 rose 7.7% after dropping 0.2% in 2009.  The top 10 only rose 2.2% and accounted for 69% of the top 25 total of $960.3 billion in sales for 2010.  With Wal-Mart far and away at top, Kroger is only $3.2 billion ahead of Costco.  For the complete list visit supermarketnews.com.

Seems like the unions are having a negative impact on strapped A&P and negotiations with C&S Wholesalers in New Jersey.  A&P has asked U.S. Bankruptcy Court to allow them to reject the contract with the Grocery Haulers union that handles 5 New Jersey warehouses exclusively and C&S has filed a notice with New Jersey's Department of Labor saying that they will close 6 New Jersey warehouses on Feb 6.  The pressure is on and how will the unions react?  With all the stores and DC's closed last year in that area, this may break the unions hold on that industry in that area.  Nationally, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union has 68 contracts up for renewal this year representing 220,000 workers and A&P and Supervalu need to strike deals "that can keep them in business," and the "pension plans are in crisis everywhere."   Two articles (Source supermarketnews.com) (Source supermarketnews.com)

Tops Markets, a 126 supermarket chain in NY, ends their 5 store trail of EasyShop handheld devices for shoppers to use to scan products which began in 2006.  They had less than a 2% customer participation rate.  However, Stop & Shop, a 560 Ahold supermarket chain in the NE, now offers the device in 280 stores calling it Scan It!  But they've added personalized discounts based on shopper history and location in the store.  With the mobile world picking up speed and the customers getting accustomed to the technology, the handheld scanners may pick up popularity or will the technology go straight into the mobile world and skip the separate device altogether?  This will impact all retail segments eventually.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

With revenue down in December in Gap brand stores by 8% and the Gap logo "firestorm" in October, Gap's North American President will be leaving this Friday.  (Source Associated Press)

Oracle to pay $46 million to settle government lawsuit that charged Sun Microsystems, a division Oracle bought last year, paid kickbacks to Accenture PLC to recommend Federal agencies buy Sun products.  Two whistle-blowers brought the allegations against Sun in 2007.  (Source Associated Press)

New "CFO Outlook Survey" by Financial Executives International (FEI) shows U.S. CFO's are continuing to show increased confidence, "reflecting one of the largest increases in the survey's history."  With 64.3% showing confidence and 64% planning to hire additional employees within the next six months which is higher than the European counterparts.  However revenue growth will prove to be the biggest challenge for their businesses in the first half of 2011.  (Source msn.com)

Dressbarn, ASNA, has teamed up with Dress for Success, an international non-profit organization that supports female economic independence, for their 9th annual "Send One Suit Weekend" Feb 24-27 -- a clothing donation program and is using their 825 locations for drop-off sites to help women in need of seeking a job and having the proper outfit to wear for a job interview.  Last year, the program delivered 43,000 professional items of clothing in 4 days and hopefully will exceed 50,000 this year.  (Source PRNewswire.com)

Domino's Pizza anticipates delivering over 9 million slices nationwide on Superbowl Sunday and their delivery drivers will cover up to 4 million miles in the U.S. alone.  (Source PRNewswire.com)

In preparing for any interview or meeting, I would suggest that, not only do you educate yourself about the potential employer, but that you study their competitor as well, because not only do these executives know their business, the good ones will know their competitors business even better. And if you show them you've taken the time to really learn their business and the number one thing that impacts them beyond the customer which is their competitor, then they'll be impressed that you went to that effort. And at the end of the day you'll learn an entire channel of trade.

Good Luck
