Borders $500 million lifeline from GE Capital not only requires they find an additional $300 million themselves, but also requires that they "finalize a store closure program and close the identified units as soon as possible."  This industry is going to shrink significantly this year, probably by as much as 20% to 25%  (Source retailingtoday.com)  Also on a separate note, Borders also announces they're delaying another round (their 2nd round) of payments to vendors and landlords to conserve cash while it attempts refinancing debt.  (Source Associated Press)

Massachusetts State Rep. David Linsky filed a bill last week to strengthen laws against ORC.  It stiffens penalties and tightens regulations on flea markets and other secondhand dealers.  Linsky, a former criminal prosecutor, worked closely with local law enforcement and the Retailers Association of Massachusetts to craft the bill.  The next step for State Rep. Linsky is gathering support for the bill among lawmakers and he plans on hosting an event for that purpose in the coming weeks.  All interested retailers should contact his office to help gather the support and lend your company's support.  (Source wickedlocal.com)

In timing with the NRF Big Show ORC session and the above-mentioned new state bill in Massachusetts, the Worchester Business Journal in Mass. ran an article today covering some of the NRF ORC session's finding's, specifically about TJX being that they are locally based there, and quoting some local news and trends.  Great timing with the new bill.  If you operate in Massachusetts, it would be wise to contact the above-mentioned State Representative.  (Source wbjournal.com)

Eight-member identity theft ring in Atlanta plead guilty or have been convicted in federal court on charges of fraud or conspiracy after tricking people to give out their banking information, siphoning money from their accounts and going on shopping sprees for over $500,000 at Victoria's Secret, Apple, Nordstrom, and Miky's Wig.  (Source ajc.com)

Costco plans on expanding their 8 members-only business stores where they sell office supplies and restaurant equipment.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

A gang of thieves in Elizabeth, NJ removed the hinges form the doors of a Burlington Coat Store and drove through the opening towards a jewelry store they intended to rob, but a maintenance worker notified police and the gang left the same way they drove in.  Shortly after, thieves drove a truck through a Toys R Us Store down the street and stole electronics and possibly some cash.  Watch out for this gang!  (Source cbslocal.com)

eBay Users Donate $54.8M to Non Profit Organizations

Buyers and sellers on eBay donated $54.8M to U.S. & U.K. nonprofit organizations in 2010. A donation was made every 24 seconds through eBay Giving Works, the company's nonprofit fundraising program in the U.S., raising more than $91 every minute for nonprofits. Overall, donations were up 7 percent last year vs. 2009, and nearly 9 million items were listed for sale, with all or a portion of the sale price donated to a nonprofit. "Through Giving Works, eBay continues to drive innovation in online philanthropy, enabling millions of people to easily donate to organizations they care about and support people and communities in need," said eBay Inc. President & CEO John Donahoe, who recently was appointed by President Obama to serve on the White House Council for Community Solutions. Also, Margo K. Lucero, VP Business Development & Partnerships for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, added "We are grateful for the support of the eBay community, which, through its generosity, has helped raise nearly $1.7M in support of Komen's promise to end breast cancer forever." A lot of articles talk about "How to impress your boss" and give you tips on how to accomplish this.  But at the end of the day, it's all about supporting them, helping them reach their objectives and not trying to merely impress them.  Impressing a person is great, but usually short lived.  Supporting and helping them reach their goals requires a long-term effort that at times can truly test your resolve and stamina.

The thought has always been if your boss gets promoted, then you might as well -- as long as you are the one helping
them get ahead.

Good Luck
Gus Downing
