More than 100 suspected members of 6 mafia families in New York City were arrested this morning in what the "FBI is saying is the biggest organized crime round-up in New York history."  Hundreds of FBI agents, NYPD officers, state police, and U.S. Marshalls made arrests this morning in New York City, New Jersey, and New England.  Italian authorities conducted simultaneous raids on Mafia groups there as well.  (Source

ORC ring of 8 operating in Cleveland Ohio and led by a Federal inmate in Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution all plead guilty to identity theft.  Prosecutors claim Dimorio McDowell obtained personal information communicated to him while in prison including names, addresses and social security numbers of credit card holders at various department stores.  He'd then contact the stores and add additional users to the accounts or open new ones in the person's name and the cards were used to purchase $254,000 of merchandise.  McDowell got an additional 14 years added to his sentence.  Talk about having pay phones in the prisons!  Aren't they monitoring them?  (Source

According to a new study by Forrester Research that was conducted on behalf of Symantec in late 2010, more than half of the 306 companies surveyed (54%) reported a data breach in the previous year and with the increased reliance on cloud-based services, collaboration tools and enabling users to access networks, security breaches are on the rise basically because of the continued reliance on the traditional username and password sign-on to verity a user's identity rather than strong authentication.  (Source

Two security researchers from i11 Industries this week at the Black Hat Security Conference showed how physical security devices known as "tamper-evident devices," which aren't intended to prevent theft but to alert inspectors that something has been broken into, can be circumvented with common items, such as solvents, hypodermic needles, razors, blow driers and with the help of tools such as drills.  (Source

After a tide of courts throughout the country have now prevented retailers from using credit reports as part of their pre-employment investigative efforts, the Supreme Court upheld the U.S. government's background screening program that "extended" their checks to include contract workers in 2007.  A presidential directive in response to 9/11 to tighten security at facilities allows the Feds to investigate even those who don't require security clearances and don't work on secret projects.  The employees "said the agency was invading their privacy by requiring investigations that looked into their medical records and asked friends about their finances and sex lives. If the workers didn't agree to the checks and fill out questionnaires they were to be fired."  The Justice's ruled that "A federal constitutional right to "informational privacy" does not exist."  Long term, this could have broader implications on background screening process's even in the retail industry.  (Source Associated Press)

Expanding on what John Velke said in yesterday's tip, your self-evaluation is probably the most important document you'll write all year and it requires a degree of self-reflection and openness that, if done correctly, thoroughly, realistically and written well, will in actuality garner more respect than virtually anything else you can do.  However, it's also a double-edged sword that mandates your adherence and constant effort to reach your written objectives and goals.  The problem is that while most are rather open about their areas of improvement, very few actually quantify what they are going to do to improve and set specific goals that are realistically obtainable.  The first step may be in just approaching and completing the reviews of your direct reports first and doing them with the same intensity and focus as you do yours.  This step gets you in the game so to speak and allows you to tie yours into your teams and also may just give you some feedback you need to hear.

Just a Thought
