The NRF's first ever "State of the Industry" conference call Friday went extremely well with more listeners than expected and great content from Joe LaRocca, NRF Sr. LP Advisor, and Bill Titus, VP of LP for Sears HC.  The next one on Jan 27 dealing with the National Level Response exercise that  Homeland Security is planning this May should be extremely beneficial and an absolute must attend in order to prepare for this historic and necessary proactive event.  For more information, click here.

The British Retail Consortium's (BRC's) Retail Crime Survey 2010, published today, shows an 11% drop in number of offenses per 100 outlets against 2009.  Shoplifting was down 10.6% though the total value of goods stole was up over last year.  Employee theft was up 68%, but the increase was "partly explained by employers improving their methods of detection." Total value of goods stolen by customers was $217.8 million with the average loss $111.30 up from $71.55 last year.  With 482,831 shoplifting incidents reported at the participating retailers, it averages to almost 2 thefts per minute across the UK.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

One analyst says if Borders can't find new ways to sell books, "it might as well be shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic--it's just a matter of time before the boat sinks, for good."  (Source marketwatch.com)

With Target going north into Canada, a number of Canadian retailers will be feeling the pinch.  Loblaw, a Canadian grocer, it's said copied one of Target's concepts 5 years ago called "Joe Fresh Style Line" and will be in their direct path.  Wal-Mart superstores have been very successful in Canada and, now that Target's going there in a big way, the pressure will be on.  (Source theglobeandmail.com)

Leonard Green and TPG equity group look like they will take over J Crew for $2.86 billion.  Taking them private means growth now and IPO later.  (Source wincountry.com)

In a few months, the EU (European Union) will institute new privacy rules that state  'the storing of information, or the gaining of access to information already stored-- is only allowed on condition that the subscriber or user concerned has given his or her consent, having been provided with clear and comprehensive information.'  Cookies will be virtually forbidden without permission.  This is a game changer!  "While the debate continues on how this will affect how you run your online affairs, one thing is clear: you must be 100% aware of every single instance where your sites are setting cookies -- including any from third party providers. Setting cookies without consent will put you in breach of the law, with potentially serious legal and financial consequences. Pleading ignorance will be no excuse!"  How will this influence the States long term? (Source theretailbulletin.com)

eBay Assistance with Designer Dress Theft Leads to Arrests

eBay PROACT Asset Protection investigators in Europe assisted the Greater Manchester Police agency with tracking and recovering stolen items belonging to a well-known fashion designer who regularly outfits celebrities and movie stars alike. The items, described as expensive dresses valued between 120 and 225 each, were stolen during a warehouse break-in where the total loss was estimated at approx 100,000 (Approx. $175K). A search warrant was executed in Bolton, Manchester and three people were arrested for possession of stolen goods and approx. 9k of the dresses were recovered and returned to the victim. Criminal charges are pending against the three suspects arrested with the Crowne Prosecutors office. Click here for full article.

One of your primary objectives in any negotiation should be to show a positive, upbeat and an enthusiastic approach to the entire process regardless of the offer. Always wait for the details before accepting any offer because the devil may be in the details. Remember, the hardest thing to negotiate is the benefits because of precedent-setting company standards. If you prepared the employer before the offer with a written (emailed) list of your entire current package in detail, it can make it easier to discuss when it counts the most.

Good Luck
