The industry is starting off rather normally with only 6 senior LP positions available in North America presently.  December and January are the two slowest months in the year for job movement and open positions.  It's very unlikely we'll see a repeat of last spring's 19 senior LP appointments, the biggest senior job gain in history.  Certainly we'll see a number of new appointments and the industry is still over 20 senior positions short of the industry's level in 2007.  With losing 44 senior positions between August 2008 and March 2010 and adding back 23 from March 2010 to present, we're still 21 short of merely that number as verified with Dave Meyers list he was meticulously keeping prior to his retirement last summer.

ORC - Home Delivery gang busted by Homeland Security where two Vietnamese exchange college students at Minnesota's Winona University made more then $1.2 million selling software, video games and Apple gift cards on eBay, and the shipping buyers products that they'd purchased with stolen credit cards.  It appears this is becoming a big problem throughout North America.  (Source computerworld.com)

Facing a potential takeover, BJ's Wholesale Club is cutting 114 corporate jobs, closing 5 stores resulting in another 380 job cuts, and the CFO is retiring.

Leonard Green Equity Investors, the group that announced it owned 5.1 million shares of BJ's and plans on pursuing a takeover, bought Jo-Ann Stores for about $1.6 billion last month and also has significant investments in Whole Foods Market as well.  This was the firm that years ago merged the west coast drug store chains and led buyouts at Petco and Sports Authority.  It will be extremely difficult to stop them at BJ's.  (Source Associated Press)

Obama did sign the Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act yesterday although some Congressional leaders may block the $1.4 billion funding.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

The Better Business Bureau today released a list of the top 10 scams and rip-offs of 2010. Job hunters and those struggling to make money and get out of debt were common targets of fraudsters, hackers and deceptive businesses in this tough economy.  Interesting read, but nothing really new.  (Source bbb.org)

For $650, anyone can intercept phone calls and text messages sent over the majority of the world's mobile networks as demonstrated this past week at the 27th Annual Chaos Communications Congress in Berlin.  With four $15 Motorola handsets, a medium-end computer and a 2TB hard drive, anyone can tap into 80% of the world's mobile traffic.  (Source theregister.co.uk)

HMV plans on closing 60 of its 285 UK stores this year with a company breakup and further store closings expected.  The retail music industry continues its downward spiral worldwide.  (Source clickorlando.com)

December retail sales will be extremely interesting to see.  Let's hope for the best.  However with prices of virtually everything going up, from cotton in Chain, to food worldwide, to gas prices, to virtually everything, inflation will be a significant problem this year and may impact 2011 retail sales and profitability.

After making a delivery at a PetSmart store in Greeley, Colorado, Scott Walker, a trucker driving for Michael Most Trucking, went on a rampage, abandoning his truck and with a gun in his hand hijacked a Comcast truck, threatened people, yelled at motorists and passerbyers, and finally fired at a police officer.  He's been charged with 32 counts.  (Source denverpost.com)

The 1 city block comprising Times Square in NYC pumps $13 billion into the NYC economy annually.  Disney recently opened their 22,000 sq. ft. flagship there before Thanksgiving and they're doing fantastic.

January is the National Stalking Awareness Month.  There are 3.4 million adults stalked every year in the U.S. and certainly this has an impact on the retail industry both from our employee population and the customer population.

MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse data on retail sales for Nov. 28 to last Saturday show clothing in Mall-based stores up 10.9%, footwear in Mall-based stores up 10.8%, Luxury up 8.5% (includes restaurants but excludes jewelry), jewelry up 10.4%, furniture and home furnishings up 0.6%, consumer electronics and home appliances up 1.2%, and online all goods up 17.6%.  A great report!  (Source Associated Press)

eBay Supports PROACT Member Leading to Arrest of Store Manager

eBay PROACT Asset Protection investigators assisted Wal-Mart Loss Prevention team leading to arrest of former Store Manager for theft exceeding $250,000. Jeromie L. Michener, 31, was booked into the Henderson Detention Center on theft and burglary charges. Michener is accused of stealing unopened electronic merchandise such as computers, video game systems, televisions and portable automobile GPS navigation systems and selling the items on eBay. Michener admitted to stealing about $10,000 worth of items, but store officials and detectives suspect he stole $250,000 worth of items over the past two years and sold them on the Internet. He set up a storage unit to house the stolen items before shipping them out. When detectives searched the storage unit, they found 54 portable automobile GPS navigation systems along with various video game merchandise. Click here for full article.

We've all got great ideas and plans.  The problem lies in putting them together, rolling them out and maximizing speed to market.  Making it happen quickly and efficiently - that's the key to success.  The first obstacle is always fear of risk.  Making an idea a reality requires risk taking and sometimes you've just got to make it happen if your inner self, or the bird on your shoulder, tells you it's the right thing to do.  I was writing this e-newsletter for a year before one morning last year, on March 25, I walked in and just said hey we're doing it.  Yes, I was absolutely fearful of all the critics and naysayers, but I took the risk and made it happen.  There will always be torpedoes in the water and sometimes they hit.  But to make things happen you've got to jump in the water and swim as fast as you can.

Just a thought
