The general consensus among a number of Loss Prevention executives appears to be that, while internal theft has not increased during this holiday season due in part to their belief that people value their jobs more than ever before, external theft has indeed increased and the ORC activity has certainly increased.

Charlotte, N.C., Mecklenburg County is reporting that the number of shoplifting cases has doubled from last December.  (Source wsoctv.com)

Portland, Ore. ORC ring busted over the weekend in a Tacoma Mall that is believed to be as large as nine women and teenage girls moving from Mall to Mall.  (Source komonews.com)

New Haven man sentenced to 7 years in prison for stealing more than $780,000 in an identity theft scheme where he used peoples' identities/credit cards to buy goods at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.  (Source nhregister.com)

"The European Union" (EU) is examining a plan to use "crowd sourcing" to fight internet crime, allowing members of the public to connect directly with police and report internet security attacks and online scams.  The BBC is reporting that the millions of computer users across the EU could be galvanized into joining the fight against cybercriminals, with all data about internet crime collected and "reported online at a national level, in a harmonized way across the EU."  (Source sophos.com)

Romanian police arrest 42 and break up a cybercrime ring that specialized in hacking into corporate phone systems of Western firms before making calls to premium rate numbers under their control, earning a commission in the process and causing over $14.6 million in losses.  Victims included corporations in the U.S., UK, South Africa, and Italy as well as Romania.  (Source theregister.co.uk)

Amazon last month posted a book for sale entitled The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: A child-lovers Code of Conduct and removed it after their reviews page was "deluged with criticism."  The author, Phillip Greaves, was arrested in Pueblo, Colo. shortly afterwards for distributing the book in Florida where he had sent autographed copies, after being paid $50 to an address in Lakeland, Fla.  (Source leaderpost.com)

Meanwhile, Amazon announces it will build two major distribution centers in Chattanooga, Tenn., and create 1,400 jobs.  This will create a number of LP positions as well.  (Source myfoxmemphis.com)

The true sign the recovery is happening is that companies are buying back their own stock, at recession low levels, at more than double the pace of last year.  In the July to September period, the number hit $79.6 billion vs. $34.9 last year.  They're trying to jump in before stocks start rising next year after the good news comes out about this holiday season.  Overall, that's good news for everyone other than Obama who wants companies to spend on hiring more people.  But that won't happen in the near future as companies have gotten use to lower staffing levels and the mandate of "Doing More With Less."  (Source mysanantonio.com)

Same-store sales at a selection of U.S. retailers posted the biggest holiday jump last week, rising 4.2 percent as more consumers finished shopping with 74% of shoppers completing their gift buying in the week ended Dec. 18, spurring faster sales growth than the previous three weeks. That compared with 56.6% a week earlier according to the International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs.  (Source bloomberg.com)

CarMax 3Q reports same store sales up 16% with revenue up 23%.

WikiLeaks founder's Swedish Police report, in which two women accuse Assange of rape, were leaked themselves the day he was to appear in front of a judge for his bail application.  (Source Associated Press)

Blockbuster to close 182 stores in the next few months and has already closed more than 1,000 in the last two years.  It had 3,000 when it went into bankruptcy.  Documents filed Friday said it plans on closing 72 by year end and another 110 in the first few months of 2011.  (Source bloomberg.com)

Former Carter's executive, Joseph Elles, is being charged with fraud and insider trading after he lied about the company's financial picture and understated the expenses and overstated the net income of Carter's Inc. in Atlanta.  It also says Elles gave the company's largest customer deep discounts that were not reflected in financial disclosures as well.  The SEC says Elles made $4.7 million from the fraud between 2004 and 2009.  The SEC says it will not charge Carter's because the incident was isolated and the company cooperated fully.  (Source sec.gov)

$30.2 million seized in Vatican assets in a money laundering probe that prosecutors allege that clergy might have been front men for corrupt businessmen and mobsters and a judge has upheld the seizure.  (Source Associated Press)

FBI reports violent crime is down 6.2%, property crimes are down 2.8%, murders dropped 7.1%, robberies down 10.7% and vehicle theft dropped 9.7% in the first half of 2010.  (Source yahoo.com)

The week between Christmas and New Years is the best time to think about what you accomplished in 2010 and what you want to do in 2011.  As they all say, make your New Year's resolutions and extend it to your career.  But I suggest going one step further and develop a plan for 2011 and what you want to accomplish.  Take it seriously and literally sit down and write up a plan for yourself and put it in a drawer to be pulled out occasionally and, at the end of next year, check and see if you reached your goals.  Just remember, plans are great, but execution is what matters.

Just a thought
