Brad Brekke, Vice President, Assets Protection, Target Corporation makes the list in December's Security Magazine's "Security's Top 25 People in the Security Industry."  He's the only retail executive on the list other than Vince Volpi, founder and CEO of PICA Corporation who spent a brief time as the senior LP executive at Polo Ralph Lauren in the early 90's.   This was the magazine's second annual listing to identify and honor the Top 25 Most Influential People in the Security Industry.  "The list represents what readers, advisory board members and editors feel are those people -- end-users, independent consultants, authors, government officials and integrators -- who have significantly impacted their colleagues, society and the industry."  (Source Security Magazine)

Fairfax County, Va., has RATT patrols roaming the malls and arresting dozens of suspects this holiday season and recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.  These RATT patrols (retail-anti-theft-teams) are special police units that are cracking down on shoplifting rings and have been very successful.  (Source nbcwashington.com)

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld this week a lower court's ruling against Costco Wholesale Corp. saying that they were unauthorized to sell Omega's copyrighted watches by buying Omega watches on the international market cheaper from dealers and selling them at a deep discount off the manufacturer's suggested retail in the U.S.  This may cause retailers to hesitate from buying gray market goods overseas.  This is a landmark decision and reinforces the copyright protections worldwide.  Taking into consideration all of the activity in the U.S. surrounding enforcement of copyright protections with music, videos, designer goods and the like worldwide, it seems only right the court would rule this way.  You can't have it both ways.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

Clemency was denied in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for Billy Don Alverson, the condemned killer of a QuikTrip clerk that he and three others beat to death with a baseball bat in the cooler of a QuikTrip while robbing it in 1995.  (Source tulsaworld.com)

The Commerce Department is calling for the creation of a "privacy bill of rights" for internet users that would establish "fair information principals" and set ground rules for companies collecting consumer data online and how they use it.  This comes two weeks after the FTC recommended the creation of a "Do Not Track" tool to let consumers stop or restrict advertisers from peeking over their shoulder every time they go on line.  The amount of cookies and tracking activity we're all faced with on the net may soon be regulated.  The problem will be filtering it internationally.  (Source Associated Press)

DecorMyEyes.com owner, Vitaly Broker, a Brooklyn-based online retailer who also has a physical location, was arrested this past Monday for defrauding his customers by refusing to accept returns from legitimately dissatisfied customers and even threatening to "commit obscene acts of sexual violence against those who pressed the issue."  (Source tech.spreadit.org)

Zale Jewelry stores is looking to sell their 680 Piercing Pagoda jewelry kiosk business.  (Source bloomberg.com)

FBI Agents arrest Chicago man, Ahmet Keskes, for selling stolen merchandise through his internet business, Asena Corporation.  Since August 2005, Keskes sold over $2 million in merchandise.  (Source chicagopressrelease.com)

eBay Inc. announced it has acquired Critical Path Software, a leading mobile application developer that has worked with eBay for more than two years to help deliver popular mobile apps such as the eBay for iPhoneŽ app, and StubHub, eBay Classifieds and Shopping.com iPhone applications. Critical Path Software's proven mobile development capabilities will play an integral role in enabling eBay to accelerate improvements to the mobile experience for customers globally. "We're very serious about innovating in mobile commerce, and this acquisition underscores our commitment to bringing the very best and brightest in the field to eBay," said Mark Carges, chief technology officer and senior vice president, global products, eBay Marketplaces. December thru February is usually the slowest time of year to find a new job.  Retailers are consumed with Holiday sales, then inventory and finally posting the numbers and waiting for the new budget cycle to begin.  It can be a very frustrating time for anyone in the job market and quite frankly it's the roughest time as well.  For the unemployed, this is a tough time and if you know anyone unemployed, this is the time you should call them and just check in and maybe even have lunch with them.  The Holidays are about sharing and if you have a friend or colleague you know who's unemployed, give them a call and show them you care.
