Hackers unite to the support of WikiLeaks' whistleblower and secret-spilling website yesterday and launched a new attack on Visa after shutting down MasterCard's site, Swedish prosecutor's, a Swiss Bank, and many others worldwide.  Hackers are actually defending Julian Assange's WikiLeaks efforts and attacking anything that goes against him.  With WikiLeaks promising more secret documents coming out, this story will be interesting to watch long term.  President Clinton has actually said this could actually cost lives in the long run.  One Philadelphia tech firm is now collecting donations for WikiLeaks and their payment processor is preparing to sue the credit card companies that refused to process donations.  (Source msn.com) (Source Associated Press)

With smart phones becoming like wallets loaded with sensitive data and new apps coming out as fast as lightening, the exposures are going to be a pickpocket's dream come true.   Because, like Marc Maiffret, eEye co-founder and CTO says, "There isn't a single smart phone developer out there saying that what they're working on will be two months late because they have to work security in. I promise you that."  Hackers are just waiting in the weeds because security is not being focused on with all the rollouts.  (Source csoonline.com)

The U.S. House of Representatives included the budget for the new Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act into the budget bill yesterday and passed it, thus making this more of a reality next year and eliminating one of the last hurdles.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

New international survey by Transparency International shows 56% of people worldwide believe corruption has increased over the last 3 years with Europe and America leading the way.  Huguette Labelle, Transparency's chairwoman says "Institutions everywhere must be resolute in their efforts to restore good governance on trust."  This translates to every employers' employee population and Loss Prevention teams everywhere can play a role in helping their organizations regain the trust of their employees.  This is a leadership opportunity for our industry.  (Source Associated Press)

The Home Depot increases their earnings forecast and says "We know major renovation has been in decline for the past few years," vice president of merchandising Craig Menear. Instead, he said homeowners who expect to stay where they are longer are increasingly focused on maintenance and repair projects that lower the operating costs of their home.  Shifting to smaller projects is their focus with home prices continuing to decline and forcing many to stay put.  Some have even said it'll be 2018 before home prices come back.  (Source Associated Press)

Wal-Mart says that anyone hired after Jan 1, 2010 will not be paid the extra dollar an hour for Sunday work in the U.S.   With 1.4 million U.S. employees, that's going to upset quite a few.  (Source Associated Press)

Managing your career upwards is also about simply managing your boss so to speak.  While everything out there talks about managing direct reports, managing your relationships, managing your time, and managing your job, you've also got to be aware of the fact that you need to manage your boss as well.  As a matter of fact, managing your boss may be the most critical part of managing your career upwards and most don't approach it that way.  That being said, one must be careful here because most bosses don't want to be managed.

Just a thought---but be careful--I can't wait for the feedback on this one.
