The just released November-December issue of the Loss Prevention Magazine highlights bebe's new EAS source-tagging and tag recycling initiative that utilizes WG Security Products' new Eco- Smart-Green Tag Recycling Program.  Steve Fahey, Director of Loss Prevention for bebe, speaks to the entire effort from gaining support from the merchants, manufacturers, and operators and to the labor savings at the store level and the lower tag defeat rates.  Steve and his team believe it's the most comprehensive tag recycling program implemented to date by a specialty retailer in North America.  (Source

Vangent, Inc., a leading provider of results-oriented human capital and talent management solutions, this week announced the release of its newest pre-employment assessment, the Reid Report Risk Assessment, designed to help organizations reduce the risk of unethical and counterproductive behavior across the workforce.   For more information read today's "Vendor Spotlight."  (Source The Reid Report Risk Assessment)

The NRF's Women in LP Caucus is launching their 2011 Mentoring/Mentee program with an automated sign-up form available through the web site.  This program offers executives the opportunity to mentor an executive or to seek a mentor for advice, guidance, and help.  This is a great vehicle for people to share and give something back to the industry.  And it's a great, non-threatening, neutral way to get some help and advice on issues, problems, challenges, and simply to have someone to talk to that doesn't pose a threat and isn't there to judge.  In today's fast paced environment, it's always great to have someone just to throw ideas around with and just get another opinion.  And for those that are thinking about being a mentor, remember this isn't a life-long commitment, it's merely offering help and giving something back to your industry.  Please consider giving your time! And for those of you who may need some advice, remember the simplest questions are usually the most important and it takes a smart and strong person to ask for help.  Get involved and help the industry grow!

Vector Security goes above and beyond with their sponsoring of the Neiman Marcus Dallas flagship store "Big Encounters of the Little Kind" 200 ft. crawl tube for an expected 7,000 children this holiday season.  With 28 Vector Security video cameras located throughout the tubes, which takes the children on a fantasy tour through space, parents gain peace of mind and can watch their child while in the tubes and store personnel stay tuned to any safety-related issues.  Secondly, adding to the fun of watching the kids in action, additional monitors allow for implementation of an exciting new interactive feature. 'Texting points' in each display window will trigger one of six special effects inside the window (displaying the last 4 digits of the phone number that triggered the event).  A complete DVR recording system is also provided and is designed to record all activities for the Loss Prevention Department.  Happy Holidays from Vector Security!

With Apple now operating 300 retail stores and Microsoft opening its 7th this past month, you can expect an "aggressive roll-out schedule" of more Microsoft stores. This technology-driven retail growth will fuel the years to come and create growth for the LP industry as the cellular stores have.  (Source

IDC Retail Insights survey shows m-commerce (mobile) and sm-commerce (social media) will account for 28% or $127 billion of the $447 billion the NRF predicts U.S. consumers will spend this holiday season.  M-commerce and sm-commerce is growing rapidly and creates more identity theft opportunities in the stores.  Is your LP team ready? Barnes and Noble CEO says there will be fewer book stores in the country and "It's clear the market for physical books is flattening and will shrink in the future as digital content scales quickly."  Digital books are growing and Barnes and Noble is investing heavily in its e-readers as it tries to retool itself.  Will this retail sector follow the path of the video rental sector?  (Source Associated Press)

With a 445% increase in cyber security incidents since 2006 and a severe shortage of qualified security professionals, INPUT forecasts federal investment in information security to increase to $13.3 billion by 2015 at a 9.1% annual growth rate, nearly twice the rate of overall federal IT spending.  This is the boom industry in the security world and it will continue to grow for years.  A primary driver of the increased spending is the ongoing shortage of professionals with specialized cyber security skills, similar to the shortage of analysts in the retail LP industry.  Identifying, recruiting, developing, and retaining these individuals in the retail LP industry is key over the next few years.  (Source

eBay Assistance Leads to Jail Sentence

eBay Asset Protection investigators provided law enforcement with supporting documentation on related eBay and PayPal accounts which led to guilty pleas and jail sentences for New York husband and wife. The Ithaca, NY couple admitted to stealing industrial parts from a local business and selling them online. The male subject, Michael Ruffino, was formally employed by the victim, Stork H & E Turbo-Blading, and was suspected in internal thefts exceeding $50,000. eBay AP investigators utilized internal linkage tools to quickly link multiple accounts associated with the couple and took immediate action, including providing information to the District Attorney's office. Vangent Unveils New Pre-employment Risk Management Assessment
to Minimize Personnel Selection Risks

Reid Report® Risk Assessment Features Critical New Ethics Scale

Chicago, IL, Nov 29, 2010 -- Vangent, Inc., a leading provider of results-oriented human capital and talent management solutions, today announced the release of its newest pre-employment assessment, the Reid Report Risk Assessment, designed to help organizations reduce the risk of unethical and counterproductive behavior across the workforce.

With over 3 million applicant events administered each year, and more than 1,000 clients, Vangent serves a critical role in helping organizations improve the quality and integrity of their workforce. The Reid Report Risk Assessment marks another milestone in fulfilling the company's brand promise by providing a powerful and universal assessment that evaluates attitudes and behaviors associated with high levels of ethics, reliability, and responsible work habits.

In light of a greater focus on ethical misconduct, workplace security, and employee counterproductivity-- especially during periods of economic uncertainty--organizations are placing an increased emphasis on reducing their risks in these areas. "Hiring someone with questionable ethics is like getting a computer virus," said David Fabianski, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Vangent's Human Capital business. "Once inside, it's too late to avoid the damage and the impact can be far reaching. Our aim is to help our clients manage this risk proactively by using scientifically valid instruments that provide a reliable and objective assessment of job candidates' core ethical attitudes. Vangent's Reid Report Risk Assessment helps organizations achieve this goal by identifying candidates that can put the organization at risk before they are hired as well as identifying those candidates most likely to demonstrate high levels of ethics and integrity."

In addition to a new ethics scale, the Reid Report Risk Assessment features these key benefits:
• Revised for universal application across all industries and virtually all organizational positions
• Can easily be integrated into an existing personnel selection program and/or applicant tracking system, or efficiently implemented to anchor a new selection program
• Helps HR, Operations, Safety, Asset Protection, Risk Management, and Ethics/Corporate Governance
optimally manage human capital risks that can lead to costly accidents, higher turnover, and poor service
• New/updated social behavior and illicit drug admission items, narratives, and interview questions to increase utility
• Can readily incorporate additional measures related to safety, tenure, service, sales, and other specialty areas

"We see more and more examples in the news of how unethical, counterproductive, and criminal behavior can seriously jeopardize a company's financial status, brand, and security," added Eric Hutchison, Vice President, Assessment and Hiring Solutions at Vangent, Inc. "The Reid Report Risk Assessment offers organizations a concrete and proactive approach for avoiding or minimizing costly misconduct through a validated and reliable means of personnel selection."

The Reid Report Risk Assessment is the newest product in a long line of industry-leading assessments; including the Reid Report 29th Edition, Personnel Selection Inventory (PSI™), and Applicant Potential Inventory (API™), among many others. Vangent, which defined the integrity-based assessments market category in 1947, continues to provide thought leadership to the industry, including chairing both the Association of Test Publisher's Industrial Division and Standards Committee that published the Model Guidelines for Pre-employment Integrity Testing. Being a mentor can be an extremely worthwhile experience and sometimes the mentee brings mentoring to the relationship as well because we all learn from each other no matter what role we play.  And while you may be reluctant or just feel time-strapped, try giving it a chance even for a short time and see what happens.  As the old expression goes, one person can make a difference and you could help a fellow LP executive grow beyond their own expectations and, in having helped the number of people we've helped in our mere search role, I for one can say there is no better feeling in the world than helping someone reach beyond!  That's what has actually kept me doing what I do for all these years!
