The NRF's Women in LP Caucus is launching their 2011 Mentoring/Mentee program with an automated sign-up form available through the www.LPInformation.com web site.  This program offers executives the opportunity to mentor an executive or to seek a mentor for advice, guidance, and help.  This is a great vehicle for people to share and give something back to the industry.  And it's a great, non-threatening, neutral way to get some help and advice on issues, problems, challenges, and simply to have someone to talk to that doesn't pose a threat and isn't there to judge.  In today's fast paced environment, it's always great to have someone just to throw ideas around with and just get another opinion.  And for those that are thinking about being a mentor, remember this isn't a life-long commitment, it's merely offering help and giving something back to your industry.  Please consider giving your time! And for those of you who may need some advice, remember the simplest questions are usually the most important and it takes a smart and strong person to ask for help.  Get involved and help the industry grow!

IDC Retail Insights survey shows m-commerce (mobile) and sm-commerce (social media) will account for 28% or $127 billion of the $447 billion the NRF predicts U.S. consumers will spend this holiday season.  M-commerce and sm-commerce is growing rapidly and creates more identity theft opportunities in the stores.  Is your LP team ready? Barnes and Noble CEO says there will be fewer book stores in the country and "It's clear the market for physical books is flattening and will shrink in the future as digital content scales quickly."  Digital books are growing and Barnes and Noble is investing heavily in its e-readers as it tries to retool itself.  Will this retail sector follow the path of the video rental sector?  (Source Associated Press)

Charming Shoppes 3Q reports same store sales up 3% with e-commerce sales up 40% and net sales up 1%

With a 445% increase in cyber security incidents since 2006 and a severe shortage of qualified security professionals, INPUT forecasts federal investment in information security to increase to $13.3 billion by 2015 at a 9.1% annual growth rate, nearly twice the rate of overall federal IT spending.  This is the boom industry in the security world and it will continue to grow for years.  A primary driver of the increased spending is the ongoing shortage of professionals with specialized cyber security skills, similar to the shortage of analysts in the retail LP industry.  Identifying, recruiting, developing, and retaining these individuals in the retail LP industry is key over the next few years.  (Source PRNewswire.com)

eBay Assistance Leads to Jail Sentence

eBay Asset Protection investigators provided law enforcement with supporting documentation on related eBay and PayPal accounts which led to guilty pleas and jail sentences for New York husband and wife. The Ithaca, NY couple admitted to stealing industrial parts from a local business and selling them online. The male subject, Michael Ruffino, was formally employed by the victim, Stork H & E Turbo-Blading, and was suspected in internal thefts exceeding $50,000. eBay AP investigators utilized internal linkage tools to quickly link multiple accounts associated with the couple and took immediate action, including providing information to the District Attorney's office. Being a mentor can be an extremely worthwhile experience and sometimes the mentee brings mentoring to the relationship as well because we all learn from each other no matter what role we play.  And while you may be reluctant or just feel time-strapped, try giving it a chance even for a short time and see what happens.  As the old expression goes, one person can make a difference and you could help a fellow LP executive grow beyond their own expectations and, in having helped the number of people we've helped in our mere search role, I for one can say there is no better feeling in the world than helping someone reach beyond!  That's what has actually kept me doing what I do for all these years!
