Chris Spaccaforna, Regional LP Director for Sears, was promoted to Director of Operations for Sears Hometown Stores (their Hardware, Appliance Showrooms and Dealer Stores).  Of special note is that the President of Sears Hometown is also a former Loss Prevention executive, Will Powell.

Sears Holdings Corp. is the only big box retailer in the U.S. that actually grew the Loss Prevention Team during this difficult economic period, obviously showing that adding value to an organization does create growth and increase investment.

The FBI Director, Robert Mueller, and General Counsel, Valerie Caproni, are meeting with managers of several companies including Facebook and Google to lobby for support of the Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act requiring phone and broadband providers to have means to make sure they can immediately comply with court wiretap orders once the industry switches to VoIP (encrypted communications).  (Source theregister.co.uk)

Even Linkedin was a victim on September 27, 2010, of a malicious spam attack that accounted for up to 24% of all spam in a 15-minute interval where the spam message, containing an alert link with a fictitious contact request took victims to a web page that said "PLEASE WAITING...4 SECONDS" and redirects them to Google.  During this 4 seconds, the victim's PC is infected with the Zues data theft malware by a drive-by download.  It embeds itself and captures personal information, such as online banking credentials.  (Source computerweekly.com)

Imperva announced predictions for the top 10 cyber security threats for 2011 with "The insider threat is much more than you imagined," as the #2 threat where they expect data theft and security breaches tied to employees and other insiders to grow.  Great read!  (Source thesecuritypub.com)

Increased copper wire theft is becoming a national security issue since damage to networks could put the public in danger during an emergency and network facilities are beefing up security.  (Source Associated Press)

The new and more intrusive style of pat-downs by TSA at airports is causing some airports to consider dumping TSA altogether.  Federal law allows airports to opt for screeners from the private sector and with veteran pilots suing over their treatment and airline passengers' fury growing, there may be some changes soon.  (Source Associated Press)

eBay Investigators Assist With Investigation & Arrest

eBay Asset Protection investigators responded to an email request for information from Troy, MI Police Department and subsequently located additional linked accounts leading to the seizure of stolen property and multiple arrests of suspects in both Michigan and Florida. Police seized nearly 1,000 stolen in-dash GPS navigation systems as part of an ongoing investigation to curb thefts in Michigan alone. Additional information leads to a business in Seminole County, Fla., and a seizure of more than 500 units there. The FBI is investigating because the items were transported across state lines and eBay continues to work towards identifying any additional suspects that support criminal investigation by agencies in Florida and Michigan. Vector Security

Six Project Home Again Children Are Back Home Again!

Information on missing children was highlighted on Vector Security vans

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 15, 2010): In July of 2010, Vector Security made a corporate commitment to sponsoring Project Home Again. Only four months later, their commitment has already proven successful, as six children, whose posters were displayed on Vector Security vans, have been recovered.

The program seeks to return missing and kidnapped children to their parents through the use of a public awareness campaign. The campaign involves the displaying of posters, depicting the likeness and personal information of missing and kidnapped children, on service vehicles used by participating companies.

Vector Security's involvement includes their fleet of nearly 300 service vans and uniformed guard and patrol vehicles, which travel through the Mid-Atlantic States, Ohio, Florida and California. According to Ms. Sally Cox, Vector Security's Director of Purchasing and Fleet Manager, the idea came about after hearing about the program from television coverage in the Philadelphia, PA market. "Vector Security has supported the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children through several programs connected with our National Accounts Division. Our new participation in Project Home Again will help drive our
commitment to the NCMEC throughout our branch office service network."

During the first week of November 2010, two Ohio children, whose photos were featured on Vector Security vehicles, were returned home safely. Nancy Sexton was successfully located in Columbus, Ohio and Aaliyah Clark was also located in the Ohio area. Both children were the subjects of posters placed on Vector Security installation and service vehicles in Mansfield and Boardman, Ohio.

These recoveries were followed closely by one in Jacksonville FL, Samantha Lester; and one in Pennsylvania, Caroline Keyvani. Samantha's poster was displayed on a Jacksonville, FL based Vector Security van and Caroline's poster was highlighted on a Wilkes-Barre, PA based Vector Security van.

The last two recoveries involved California siblings, Alexandra and Sevan Silah, whose posters were displayed on Los Angeles, CA based Vector Security vans.

In Columbia MD, relatives of a child featured on one of Vector's vans stopped the driver and personally thanked him for Vector's role in creating more public awareness for the plight of missing children.

According to Pamela J Petrow, President and CEO of Vector Security, this encouraging news lends credence to a project which was championed by John A. Murphy, Vector Security's former President and CEO, who recently passed away in October, 2010. "John stressed that Vector's support of Project Home Again tied directly into his core corporate values."

Mr. Murphy was quoted as saying that "We're in the business of protecting the things our customers cherish the most and that certainly begins with children. Given our continuing dedication to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, this opportunity allows us to root this valuable organization further within our large and expanding branch office network. If we can help only one child make it back home, or bring his or her plight directly to the attention of the general public, it will all be worth it."

Petrow continued by remarking that "John would be overjoyed by the news that one of his favorite public advocacy programs has worked so well to help preserve the lives and hopefully the futures of these children."

Speed Kills!  As the old expression goes, so does the pace of today's world.  With technology leashing us forward and mobile coming at the speed of light, no one can slow down.  The problem then becomes focus and concentration.  Multitasking, while impossible to avoid, leads to a reduction in quality and quality is what every senior executive must be focused on.  So the next time you're running fast, just take one second and think about was the service you just delivered quality service.
