The far-reaching Food Safety bill that could give government more power to prevent foodborne illnesses is up for a Senate vote today and Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has continued his objections saying the legislation's $1.4 billion cost isn't paid for.  Opponents say it could bankrupt small farms that don't have the means to comply with the new rules and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., plans on trying to add an amendment to exempt some small farms who market food close to their operations. (Source Associated Press)

PayPal Investigative Support into Pornography Ring Leads to Another Conviction

PayPal asset protection investigators continued their aggressive outreach and dedicated assistance of supporting law enforcement investigation into child pornography and after a long-term investigation leading from England to Georgia to St. Tammany Parish, a Covington, LA area man was convicted of about 50 counts of possessing juvenile pornography. The alleged video turned up in London, England, and authorities there tracked it back to its source, according to the district attorney's office. PayPal continues to be very active in detection, prevention and sourcing information related to all illegal activity including the purchase and sale of child pornography. In a connected case, the following quotes were attributed to PayPal's investigation processes by investigating law enforcement, "PayPal has great records and works very diligently with law enforcement," "The success of the investigation hinged on PayPal's willingness to collaborate with law enforcement and on their recordkeeping." A spokesperson from eBay Inc (which owns PayPal) added "PayPal has zero tolerance for the use of its system for any illegal materials and services." "Because we have some of the most sophisticated detection methods in the industry, anyone who tries to use PayPal for this type of activity will be found and reported."  Click for full article.

Downing and Downing would like to take the opportunity of recognizing John Mearls, Senior Manager Global Assets Protection, for the great job he's done in 2010 with this column.  His articles have truly added value to the LP community and have helped to educate everyone on the efforts that the Assets Protection Team at eBay have made this past year.  Building the bridge of communications is an incredibly important task and responsibility and John has done a great job of doing just that.

There is no second chance for the first impression.  Whether it's an interview, a new management member, a new company, a new job or a new boss, the first impression can last a long time and it's something most don't give the thought, the time or the effort that it warrants.  A first impression leaves a long-lasting mark in every situation and how you manage it can and will make a difference.  So the next time you're in that position, gather your thoughts, your energy and your best performance and see the difference it makes.

Good luck,
Gus Downing
