In a continued effort to support cross-pollination and Dollar General's fight on shrinkage, Steve Deckard, Sr. Director of Store Operations for Dollar General, was named Vice President of Loss Prevention.

Mark Cohn, Vice President of enterprise security at Unisys, states in his Forbes interview that their survey shows the U.S. #1 concern is National security and #2 concern is identity theft and identity fraud and it's been that way with every survey they've done.  "Unfortunately it's real, and the problem is growing in sophistication. The new wave of attacks of all sorts is coming from all sides. It involves innovative spy gear embedded deep in the supply chain, highly selective identity theft and new ways of gaining access at all levels of corporations and government." (Source forbes.com)

Canadian Security Magazine's 3rd annual Canadian Security Salary Survey shows one universal fact, "It doesn't matter what level you are, nor if you're contract, in-house, a senior executive or someone who's coming out of college you've got to have a commitment to life learning if you want to excel in this industry.  You've got to create a way of life where you continue your education, whether that's with formalized education through a college or just attending seminars. You have to stay current within the industry. Technology changes so much. You've got to stay aware. The only way to do that is to stay networked and continue your learning," according to Christina Duffey, Director of Customer Service at Toronto-based Paragon Security.  (Source canadiansecuritymag.com)

U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday from Costco and Swiss watch maker Omega over a copyright feud where Costco, who the watchmaker had refused to sell to because of price demands, bought 43 watches with the tiny copyright symbol on them from a distributor and was selling them for $700 below the manufacturer's suggested retail price.  "Such "gray market" sales unauthorized importation of copyright goods from authorized distributors overseas are estimated to account for as much as $60 billion in annual sales in the United States." Costco countered by invoking the "first-sale doctrine" in its defense. That doctrine gives owners of "lawfully made" copyright goods one shot at a sale.  Has Costco gone to far?  The Obama administration is in support of Omega and says Congress wrote the Copyright Act to allow Omega to segment its markets and control the distribution of its merchandise.  We can't have it both ways Costco.  (Source nwsource.com)

Yesterday, the Obama administration announced new cargo rules banning freight out of Yemen and Somilia and restricted the shipment of printer and toner cartridges weighing more than a pound on all passenger flights.  The lobbying efforts from the multibillion-dollar freight industry has killed past efforts to tighten rules.  (Source Associated Press)

Oracle Corp CEO Larry Ellison testified yesterday that SAP AG should have paid $4 billion for the licenses to Oracle software that SAP's now-closed software support subsidiary TomorrowNow had stolen the business by offering the same services cheaper after TomorrowNow had stolen customer support information from Oracle password-protected websites.  SAP claims the information wasn't that valuable and only should have to pay $40 million for Oracle accounts it did gain.  Intellectual property theft is a major business and every company no matter what size can be impacted.  (Source Associated Press)

TUESDAY SPECIAL EDITION

eBay Makes it Easier for Friends, Relatives to Chip in for Holiday Gifts

eBay will launch an online group gift-buying service today designed to make it easier for several people to pitch in, buy and pay for gifts using their social-network and e-mail contacts. EBay North America Vice President Christopher Payne says it's going to be "huge" and a major step forward in social commerce, which is the still-small practice of selling products through social networks. Online retail experts aren't as certain, but eBay says the new tool makes it easier for friends and relatives to chip in for gifts because it eliminates the headache of collecting contributions. Anything on eBay that's available immediately, rather than up for bid, can be purchased this way starting today at groupgifts.eBay.com. If members of an extended family wanted to buy a gift for one member, one person would choose a gift or have one recommended by eBay and invite family members to chip in using Facebook or e-mail. "EBay Group Gifts lets you do in three minutes what is otherwise a time-consuming and painful process that can take weeks to complete." Click for full article.

Things Have Changed Since December 2008

Who will ever forget the Christmas selling season of 2008? For most of us, it will be remembered as the beginning of a financial collapse of such tremendous proportions that it would not only affect our jobs and how we perform them, but forever change every aspect of our lives. So, on the verge of this, our third anniversary of the worst recession in eight decades, it only seems fitting that we briefly explore the impact both to our industry as a whole and to each of us individually.

Both inside and outside the workplace, a phrase heard often has been "I feel lucky to have a job." We have lost many of our friends, associates and coworkers to downsizing, bankruptcy and store closings. Our companies' infrastructures have shrunk in order to compensate for lost revenue, requiring that we all go that extra mile. We have all been made to re-examine the ways in which we do everything; we have been streamlined and, by necessity, we have become much more efficient in the process. As a result, we have made a conscious effort to "raise the bar," placing a renewed and focused concentration on customer service, associate training and a back-to-the-basics discipline, which has improved the overall customer experience and the bottom line.

The recession has affected each of us individually as well. For me personally, it has meant assuming the additional responsibility for an LP Region, in addition to my corporate responsibilities. Having spent the past 26 years at the corporate level of several retail companies, it has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience to once again work directly with the stores, with the goal of achieving peak efficiency by ensuring that key components of our operational infrastructure are in place and functioning properly. Having said that, we have also realized a dramatic improvement in shrinkage for the second consecutive year.

As we continue to emerge from this recession we do so much stronger, wiser and better prepared for the future, having learned valuable lessons while making great strides along the way. We will prevail.
