Chief Super Markets (12 stores) in Defiance, Ohio, has deployed Agilence's Hawkeye video auditing system to reduce point-of-sale losses.  "In order to keep our prices competitive in an industry that operates on strict margins, we need to be proactive in minimizing shrink activities beyond just typical fraud incidents," said Stephanie Skylar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Chief Supermarkets, in a statement. The video system "allows us to do this by keeping us in control at the point of sale." (Source supermarketnews.com)

The new "Firesheep" add on app to Mozilla's Firefox browser released one week ago and already downloaded nearly a half million times, allows users to identify users on an open network--such as a coffee shop's public Wi-Fi hotspot--who are visiting an insecure Web site.  With a double click, Firesheep allows the user instant access to the accounts of others accessing Twitter and Facebook and other web sites.  With law professors saying there's no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public insecure Wi-Fi connection and still others saying that people have an expectation that whatever they're doing is governed by the privacy settings in that network, ultimately no one has privacy anymore on public Wi-Fi's until the courts decide after someone fights it, which will take an incredible incident to force that fight.  (Source csoonline.com)

With 11 million identity theft victims in 2009, the average victim lost $4,840 and spent 21 hours coping with the aftermath.  Recently, California investigators charged three Los Angeles men with 42 counts of felony identity theft for allegedly using illegal electronic devices to skim debit and credit card numbers at seven Northern California gas station pumps, including one in the Sacramento area. They allegedly stole more than $160,000 from about 200 consumers.  And the problem is growing!  (Source heraldnet.com)

Georg Avanesov, the 27-year-old arrested last week in Armenia for being the mastermind behind the "Bredolab" botnet, found his clients (cyber crooks) who rented the botnet from him mostly on Spamit.com.  It led to over 30 million hacked Windows PCs, the majority of the world's pharmaceutical spam, 3 million PCs being infected monthly, and had 143 servers dedicated to spreading it.  Avanesov made U.S. $139,000 monthly and made millions over more than a decade.  (Source krebsonsecurity.com)

Barry Vaughn, Organized Retail Crime Manager at Old Navy, was the winner of a free registration to RILA's Loss Prevention, Auditing & Safety Conference 2011, April 11-14, 2010 in Orlando, FL. Lisa LaBruno, Vice President of Loss Prevention and Legal Affairs at the Retail Industry Leaders Association, drew the winner yesterday after presenting "Organized Retail Crime: Perspective of a Prosecutor & In-House Attorney" at the NYC ORC Conference, hosted by Universal Surveillance Systems last night.

Citigroup survey on Black Friday shows 54% of people plan to shop that day, up from 49% last year, and Target has an impressive crowd control plan that will ensure shoppers flow into stores in an orderly manner to find the desired featured item and quickly complete their transactions.  They're posting store maps that designate the locations of the featured items on their web site and emailing it to registered consumers and they're assigning store employees to work the lines outside the stores to hand out the maps and assigning additional cashiers.  (Source retailingtoday.com)

Retail sales for October were "OK" according to MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse report with consumer electronic suffering declines, men's clothing sales were lackluster, consumers pulled back on major appliances, but luxury goods and women's clothing held up.  Tomorrow, retailers release their numbers.  (Source Associated Press)

CVS Caremark 3Q reports revenue down 3.1% with pharmacy services revenue down 8.5% and over the last year Caremark has reported billions in lost contract revenue.  (Source Associated Press)

The disgruntled Wal-Mart employee decided to "take on Goliath" the night before he allegedly shot three of his managers and barricaded himself in the Reno store for six hours last Friday, according to court documents released Tuesday.  (Source Associated Press)

Consumer Reports poll shows "guarded optimism" about holiday sales with only 30% saying they're cutting holiday spending vs. the 33% who said it last year, with the gap between people who want to trim their budgets and people who say they want to spend more shrinking: 19% say they're inclined to spend more vs. 16% last year.  (Source Associated Press)

The most fortified international airport in the world, Israeli Airport, gave authorities from three continents a rare peak and said "Airport security around the world isn't good enough" Tuesday while showing international experts Israel's near-legendary methods as a possible solution.  Israel, which prides itself on airport and airplane security, showed off robots and procedures to keep passengers safe. One method has been condemned in other countries — profiling.  "In the U.S., profiling is a bad word," Liss said, but he defended the practice, saying it is done by "intelligent, motivated" university students who served in Israel's military and can identify passengers who could pose a potential risk.  Great Read!  Profiling works.  (Source Associated Press)

eBay Participates in NYC Organized Retail Crime Symposium

eBay Asset Protection team continued its ongoing efforts of sharing investigative success stories with retail partners, reviewing available tools being utilized to support early detection of bad actors and educating the retail loss prevention industry on the progressive strategies and initiatives being taken across its businesses, including its highly regarded PROACT program to attack the ORC challenges. Universal Surveillance Systems sponsored and co-hosted the latest in a series of regional Organized Retail Crime Conferences held in New York, NY on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Bloomingdale's Corporation's corporate offices. "The capacity attendance we are experiencing at these regional events speaks to the significant negative economic and social impact of ORC" said Adel Sayegh, President and CEO of USS Corp. "The East Coast ORC conference will have particular relevance for those concerned with the serious issue of e-fencing, the practice of selling stolen goods through online auction sites. We are extremely gratified to have eBay, the FBI and ICE joining a distinguished group of speakers to highlight its efforts to control the resale of stolen merchandise. This is a major step forward as it brings together the representation from brick and mortar retail, ecommerce, government, and law enforcement communities needed to develop all-encompassing strategies to combat ORC." Perception becomes reality slowly on a macro level and it's difficult to change it if it's incorrect or doesn't portray the truth.  It's the same reason law enforcement separates witnesses to ensure clarity and truth.  The group mind becomes influenced by opinion and agendas and distorts the true reality.  One can only rely on daily vigilance based on doing what's right to hopefully impact the individuals one works with on a daily basis to carry the experience forward and be witness to what is right.

Good Luck
