ALERT FOR EVERY RETAILER - Second notice due to the significance of the impact - The retail industry according to Symantec's latest MessageLabs Intelligence report has been targeted this month by spear phishing attacks more so then ever before in history, launched in three waves each one week apart, using social engineering techniques to distribute legitimate-looking e-mails with malicious attachments that appear to be from HR and IT staff of the targeted organization.  There were only seven attacks a month for much of 2010 however have jumped to 516 this month.  This is the first time targeted attacks hit the retail sector the hardest and these targeted e-mails are one of the most damaging types of malicious attacks.  Is your IT department on the alert?  (Source computerweekly.com)

eBay Investigation Leads to Jail Term For Former Insurance Worker

eBay fraud investigators supported an investigation conducted by the UK law enforcement agency Trading Standards into the selling of counterfeit and copyright violations related to the sale of hundreds of DVD's leads to jail term of 14 months. David Grew, 38, made almost 1,800 illegal copies of copyright works and sold them via numerous eBay accounts. He was jailed for 14 months after his own counsel accepted he made more than 20,000 from the scam. They included 381 copies of the second series of science fiction The Tripods; 779 copies of space action series Star Fleet X Bomber; 594 copies of Battlestar Galactica 1980; 16 copies of a railway DVD; and 18 copies of a second railway DVD. The court heard Grew had worked at Derby based insurance broker and used a list of customer details to sell the pirated DVDs on eBay. Offences in breach of the copyright laws are particularly serious offences that have a damaging impact on the public and the profits of manufacturing and retailing companies specializing in this field. Steve McClain, Sr. VP Asset Protection, The Sports Authority

A Global Business Approach

With a BS Degree in Criminal Justice and Business Administration, 30 years of retail Asset Protection experience with such retailers as Carlson Companies, Target Stores, Hollywood Video, and now the last 8 with Sports Authority, Steve has shown how taking a global approach has added value and made an impact on the overall business at Sports Authority and gone beyond the traditional shrinkage bucket.

Steve's approach from the beginning was to design a model and deliver a service that was based on sound business principles.  First was that the AP model is based on the philosophy of impacting the global business of Sports Authority.  Second was that he approached the function as a personal business that had a P&L and that the AP business itself has customers which meant that the entire effort should be focused on delivering exceptional customer service everyday.  Third was that the AP effort has to understand the "numbers" beyond the shrink bucket, intimately, in order to truly add value and make an impact.  Fourth was that the AP effort needed to have a global understanding of the business itself and how it could impact every single line item in the business's P&L. Fifth was the absolute necessity to protect the company brand from all aspects.

This holistic successful approach brought Steve increased responsibilities in the organization and his Senior Vice President's role.  Now, he's responsible for the Returns Management, Reverse Logistics, and Quality Control functions as well.  These functions, while unique for a typical AP executive to have as a responsibility, fit Steve's model and show how by expanding one's vision of how to apply AP business principles on a global level, one can achieve a senior role and truly integrate the AP effort enterprise wide.

Steve achieved this by simply applying sound AP business principles to every aspect of these additional functions.  Whether it's managing the return processes to increasing efficiencies and minimizing loss, or ensuring product quality and safeness at the point of manufacturing in China, Steve has been able to expand and integrate the AP effort into the full circle of the retail process, from the manufacturer - to the distribution center - to the store - returned to the store - to the distribution center - and finally back to the manufacturer, a truly integrated AP program enterprise wide.

Steve also points to the need to embrace technology and passionately believes that "Data is King."  Data predicts human behavior and shows not just the bad, but also the good.  It can help you find what the bad people are doing to hurt the company and it can also help you find what the good people are doing to help the company as well, an element most often overlooked.

His advice to the younger AP executive is that you've got to expand your vision about your job and take it beyond the security bucket.  Grow your role and broaden your impact on what you can and cannot do.  Try to understand what your customer needs, learn and educate yourself about the retail business and know your data because "Data is King."

Steve has interviewed hundreds of young executives for positions over the years and and the one thing he always looks for is the executive that goes beyond the shrink/LP bucket so to speak, the one who's involved and integrated in the business of retail.

With less then a dozen Senior Vice Presidents of AP in the industry in North America, Steve has shown how he's reached that level and how he's integrated AP into the entire enterprise at Sports Authority.  Great Job Steve and thanks for sharing your story.

Sometimes you have to lose in order to win long term.  Picking your battles is an art that many never acquire, but those that do are usually two steps ahead of you.  So while the loss may seem to set you back, regroup and focus two steps ahead because that's where the winner of the last battle is.  And remember always lose with dignity and win with humility.

Have a great Halloween!
