CAP Index releases the latest Canadian version of its CRIMECAST database which is of special interest in Ontario where the recent passage of Bill 168 has mandated employers to conduct risk assessments for workplace violence.   CAP's updated Canadian database utilizes new geographies that were delineated as a result of boundary changes implemented within the most recent Census. These changes can impact how a location's overall risk is calculated.  (Source canadiansecuritymag.com)

What is the Perception of Your LP Team: In the Industry? In Your Company?

In my current role, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with many different LP departments, and to see many different LP strategies.  Typically the teams fall into one of several "categories."   Some are internal and external theft driven, while others put the bulk of their focus on awareness training.   Some teams prefer traditional Loss Prevention techniques to get the job done, and others are pioneering new technologies.

It is not for me to say which of these philosophies is "best," as (undoubtedly) successes are to be found within each.

Clearly the success of an LP team comes, not simply from the philosophy and drive of the department as a whole, but from the vision and execution of its members.

That being said, there is one "type" (if you will) of Loss Prevention team that seems to be a model for the future: The "Operational" Loss Prevention teams.  These folks are completely committed to partnering with all company departments, levels, and groups.   While "traditional" LP folks at heart, they are at the same time:  Operators, merchandisers, inventory specialists, data miners, safety gurus, customer service specialists, and (often) internal auditors.

For example:  During my recent travels with a Regional Loss Prevention Manager, I had the pleasure of observing her interaction with an Operational District Manager.  The rapport between the two of them was apparent.  As they toured the store, the RLPM asked poignant questions relating to an upcoming sale, the merchandising strategy for that sale, and any predictions of potential problems with the event price file downloading on time.  The DM in turn, asked the RLPM educated questions related to shrink liability, LP budgeting, and product protection strategy.  Every piece of the conversation had direct shrink, margin and sales implications; and both field managers were completely on the same page.

How can an LP team go wrong with that kind of partnership?

Sometimes it's not what you say that's important as much as it's what they feel six months after the conversation.  Being a good wordsmith is a skill, but ensuring that what you say leaves the right impression long term is a true art and one that is only reached by reflection and intention.

Just a thought
