Corporate America is taking a hard line on email content and executives are being terminated for anything that may appear inappropriate in the slightest way.  Where there is even doubt executives are being terminated and the courts haven't ruled in yet on the varying degrees that constitute termination, this is an area that is sure to be tested in the future and the rulings are needed as corporate America is taking a Zero Tolerance position.

Holiday sales will be modestly better than everyone is expecting, but will not loosen up the capital budgets next year.  Job growth in the LP industry will see a spike in the spring at the senior level, but nothing like we saw in the spring of 10'.

Mentoring -- What time do you take for  your staff?

We've all been there at one time or another in our individual careers where we looked for help, wanted to ask the question, maybe make a statement, suggest an alternative or maybe just needed a sounding board within our department.

Some of us looked internally to the trainer we had, maybe we sought those individuals that we are most comfortable with as a co-worker?  Did we even think about approaching our immediate supervisor or our Director or Vice President?  Chances are dependent upon that person's demeanor, or shall I say air about them, determined that outcome.

Let's be honest!  You didn't select that latter route did you?  But then what happens, we are someday lucky enough to elevate our professional status to a senior's position, a corporate manager a director or perhaps even a vice president.

Some, to coin a phrase, "forget where they came from."  By that, I mean they stand aloof and leave the daily routine sometimes to those on their staffs to handle, so that they can deal with the more important things pressing within the company.

Speaking personally, with a combined experience level between Law Enforcement and The Retail Loss Prevention Sector of thirty-six years, I admired those in my career that gave me the time and listened, those that facilitated the thought process, not dictated, those that showed me that my thoughts, my words, and even my deeds meant something to the overall scheme of things, the "mentor."  And yes, this means good, bad or indifferent.

I would be foolish to say all singular ideas are solely the best.  Criticism is great when presented and received in the right fashion for it should facilitate even more thought or ideas when done properly.

No matter where we sit, whatever the title, do we take the time to contact, to listen to explain or exchange ideas with our staff?  We should, the payoff is insurmountable!  Mentoring allows both participants to grow both personally and professionally.  John Crosby stated, "Mentoring is a brain to pick and ear to listen and a push in the right direction."

With emails now the primary method of communicating, the world has become a different place.  English professors are gritting their teeth over the new email language and corporate America is watching and grading every sentence.  It is important to always be a professional in every venue and emails should be an area one excels at regardless of topic or executive you are communicating with. Emails are permanent files that take on an identity themselves and how you mold your identity is critical every day.
