News Brief Sponsored by WG Security Products, Inc.

Envysion®, Inc. (www.envysion.com), the leading Managed Video as a Service (MVaaS) provider, yesterday announced the launch of Support Levels, a new set of services that allow clients to select the level of IT support suited to their business needs.  Envysion will offer three distinct levels of technical support for its award winning MVaaS platform.  Our focus continues to be on creating easy to use solutions that deliver material value to our customers, and we saw an opportunity to provide simple, straightforward technical support that was lacking in the managed video market,” says Matt Steinfort, President and CEO of Envysion.  Envysion puts the power of video into the hands of a multi-unit operator’s entire organization, reaching across departments to 1000s of users, to provide unique business insight that delivers 10-15% profitability improvement. The company created the Managed Video as a Service (MVaaS) model, which brings the Software as a Service (SaaS) approach to video.  For more information, visit www.envysion.com or call 877.258.9441.

Target to have 462 of its 1,750 stores converted to their PFresh format.  Target will discount prices on more than 1,000 toys this holiday season with 250 of the items only found at Target.  They only opened 13 stores this year, but one opening this past weekend was a store in Flushing, New York, that is a 180,000 square foot "beast" in Queens Sky View Center.  (Source Retailing Today)

The Gap drops its new logo and says they didn't handle the change correctly and missed a chance to have shoppers offer input until it was too late so they'll keep the decades old logo for now.  (Source yahoo.com)

Connecticut's new ORC law went into effect Oct.1 and makes any act of organized retail crime a felony.  With New York state-based shoplifting rings targeting their high-end retail stores in the affluent Fairfield County, the law gives them extra teeth to break up the rings and rein them in.  (Source fairfieldcitizenonline.com)

Family Dollar to open 300 new stores in 2011, a 50% increase over 10', and renovate 600 to 800 with their new look that expands their food offerings that target that "all-important midweek fill-in trip" and cost $100,000 to $130,000 per store.  (Source supermarketnews.com)

Dollar Tree Stores buys Canada's 84-store chain Dollar Giant Stores.  Now the question will be how many stores do they plan on opening over the next two years?  Seems like U.S. retailers are swarming to Canada.  (Source myabc50.com)

Gymboree purchased by Bain Capital for $1.8 billion.  (Source go.com)

With 97% of people not leaving home without their cell phone, it is the most direct, reliable, and personal way to communicate with shoppers and the apps are just starting to come out with more on the horizon.  This is the new frontier for retailers and the mobile will mold tomorrow's retail consumer.  (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Wal-Mart said its discounting an "array of toys," but didn't give any numbers yet.  (Source Associated Press)

Regus Business Tracker survey that interviews more than 10,000 businesses around the world shows that 36% will increase headcount in 2011.  (Source PRNewswire.co)

Cloned Debit and Gift Cards is the new fad with skimming devices and wireless mini-cameras stealing peoples account information and PIN numbers quite easily.  And the answer may be as simple as shielding the keypad when entering your pin #.  Great read (Source longislandpress.com)

Currently, there are 8 senior LP positions in the U.S. open which is a good sign for the industry.

October is the worst performing month in the New York Stock Exchange and traditionally if anything bad is going to happen it happens this month.  As was the case two years ago when it crashed over a week's period and truly sent the flags up that the recession was here with virtually every retailer literally freezing all new jobs and any hiring at all and followed by the biggest payroll cuts ever in retail over the next 4 months.

With the historic 44 senior LP job loses between the June 08' and Feb 10' period, we've now seen 23 senior LP positions added back from an industry prospective since Feb. 10' to present.

$9.6 billion in Fraudulent returns in 2009
22nd Annual Retail Theft Survey = 1 million shoplifters in 2009

If you ever think your job is in jeopardy, then you're probably right.  Hearing the footsteps isn't a pleasant thing, but not hearing them is a fatal blow and probably means you're not listening.  It's always important to keep your ears to the floorboards and read your environment as best you can every day, because as we've seen over the last few years, no one is immune in this economy and what you've done for them today drives where you'll be tomorrow.  That "Doing More With Less"  philosophy isn't just an expression for the masses, it's for every executive in every job and what more can you be doing?

Just a Thought
