Target to open 200, Marshalls 100+, Victoria's Secret plans 45 stores, Bed Bath & Beyond, Loblaw to open 500 mobile stores, Netflix, Gap Direct, Lowe's to continue expanding all announced expansion in Canada this year with a number missing from this list.  With the U.S. at 46 sq. feet of retail space per capita and Canada at 13 sq. feet of retail space per capita, there's plenty of space north of the border.  Is there the LP population to meet this increased demand?

Chinese manual laborers are seeing 20% increases and in one case after 11 suicides in one plant one company gave its employees a 66% pay increase.  This low-wage rate country is dealing with labor unrest that is driving prices up and will have a significant impact on costs this coming spring.  Add this to the increased cost of cotton and the decreased number of tankers and what we may see are some real costs problems next year that will impact every retailer in north America.  (Source theglobeandmail.com)

eBay Partner Leads on Line Assists With solving Murder Investigation
Police used an online database, LeadsOnline, that tracks and recovers stolen property to help solve the murder of a 17-year-old high school student.  With no suspects in the case, detectives questioned numerous people and a few days later came up with a suspect, a 27-year-old ex-con, but they were unable to locate him.  Detectives ran the suspect's name through the LeadsOnline database commonly used to track and recover stolen property.  The LeadsOnline database uses a variety of ways to search for stolen property, including serial and model numbers, as well as descriptions.  Because the system is an online nationwide network that pawn shops and secondhand stores report to, police have real-time access to the information, no matter where the item is sold.  Based on the information supplied by LeadsOnline, police were able to track and ultimately arrest the suspect.

As all of us progress in our careers, we carry our past with us.  And as one pointed out yesterday in response to our tip, that past is written in "indelible ink" that can't be simply erased in the process of attempting to reinventing ourselves.  On the contrary, it must be recognized, accepted, and critically reviewed for any of us to successfully reinvent ourselves.  Self-reflection and self-assessment is a difficult task for all of us, however, without it how are we to truly grow.  Reinventing one's self is not a transaction, it's a process that continues through life and can only happen if we're honest with ourselves and truly willing to make changes.  But in paraphrasing a famous 20th century philosopher, Joseph Campbell, he said we are today what our yesterdays made us, but we can be tomorrow whoever we wish to be as long as we start being it today.  It may not be simple, but it does start with a first step.

Just a thought
Gus Downing
