Burlington Coat Factory names Patty Bartiromo (Veltre) as their new Manager of Investigations and Loss Prevention Training.  In the second month of their LP reorganization, Burlington Coat is making significant improvements in their LP organization and growing the effort.  New jobs, new opportunities and a new approach should make an impact on their shrinkage performance next spring.

John Hawthorne, Senior Manager of Loss Prevention Distribution for Publix Super Markets, discusses how they approach their ORC efforts in this article in the Security Director News.  Great Story.  (Source securitydirectornews.com)

Kroger has been reorganizing their LP effort as well and adding District Loss Prevention Managers nationwide as well as developing new LP programs that will ultimately have a significant impact on shrink as well.  More details to follow on this news story next week.

In the heat of this economic downturn, we've seen Sears HC, Kroger, Burlington Coat, Dollar General, Ross Stores, TJX, Home Depot, Sam's Club, BJ Wholesale, DSW actually add LP jobs.  While it certainly doesn't make up for the numbers we've lost as a result of the increasing District store scope, it does show the contributions LP can have on shrink.

Virtually every retailer is reporting increased ORC activity over last year and while there is no definitive study or reporting mechanism to substantiate any claim, this writer would guesstimate at least a 25% increase conservatively speaking.

The Careerbuilder Work in Retail site is developing a Loss Prevention section and is asking for input in its descriptions of entry level jobs and what it takes to have a successful career in retail Loss Prevention.  Given their size, market exposure and popularity, this could be a huge opportunity for the industry if they get the right information and it's managed by the right LP executives.  Anyone interested in following up, please contact this writer via email at gusd@downing-downing.com for more contact information.

With consumer confidence slipping in September, retail sales did better then expected and it may be a sign that the consumer, while drenched in a sea of bad news, home depreciation and high unemployment, may be at least spending at levels above last year out of necessity and the fact that overall personal debt has decreased.  (Source cnn.com)

With the head of Interpol last week saying that identity theft is becoming the #1 criminal activity in the world and with himself being a victim, one would be wise to take the time to become an expert in this area of Loss Prevention.  How it impacts the retailers is broad reaching and goes beyond merely the stores and reaches into the very infrastructure of an organization.  Company data is an asset and Loss Prevention should be leading the efforts to protect these assets.

Just a thought
