The Dow Falls 400+ Points as Coronavirus Fears Escalate

As the World Health Organization mulls whether to label the widening coronavirus outbreak a global public health emergency, an expert warned that the crisis is only “at the beginning” — but people can help protect themselves with one simple step

Chinese health officials are rushing to contain an outbreak of coronavirus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has infected at least 4,500 people, claimed the lives of at least 100 others, and is slowly popping up in other countries.

“Social distancing; that’s step number one. Keep your distance from other people” in order to avoid contracting or spreading an infection, Garrett told “The Final Round.” Cleanliness and personal hygiene is also of utmost concern, she added.

Over in China, the situation is growing dire. Millions in and around Wuhan are currently on lockdown, with worried citizens creating long lines to test for the virus.

Yet despite the nation’s best efforts, local governments are overwhelmed by the sudden outbreak, Garrett said — and the growing number of travel advisories and bans are adding to the jitters. Both Hong Kong and Russia on Tuesday imposed bans on travelers from mainland China as they scramble to contain new infections.

“So it’s, so far, relatively controlled. But what’s going on in China is out of control,” she warned. yahoo.com

Coronavirus Live Updates: U.S. Evacuates Citizens, and Deaths Mount

6,000 Cases - 132 Deaths - 5 Cases in U.S. & 3 in Canada

Chinese officials confirmed nearly 6,000 cases of the mysterious illness as foreign governments airlifted their citizens out of Wuhan, the outbreak’s epicenter.

China said on Wednesday that 132 people had died from the virus, which is believed to have originated in the central city of Wuhan and is spreading across the country. The previous count, on Tuesday, was 106.

The number of confirmed cases increased by nearly 25 percent to 5,974 on Wednesday, up from 4,515 on Tuesday, according to China’s National Health Commission.

Thailand has reported 14 cases of infection; Hong Kong has eight; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; Japan has seven; France has four; Canada has three; Vietnam has two; and Nepal, Cambodia, Germany and the United Arab Emirates each have one.

Rise in number of cases outside China is “very concerning,” expert says.

Analyst: Coronavirus will hit airport retailers worldwide

2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games - In 2 Months - Impact????

Airport retail is likely to decline as a result of the spreading coronavirus.
That’s according to GlobalData Retail, which said that the prevention of travel for Chinese consumers will impact the performance of airport retail worldwide. Global airport retail had been estimated to increase 6.1% in 2020, to $48.2 billion.

The coronavirus has already dented retail and leisure spending across the Chinese New Year holiday due to consumers being encouraged, and in some cases forced, to stay in and avoid travel.

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo should provide a significant boost to airport retail in Japan and neighboring countries as visitors tour the region.

“However, controlling the spread and severity of coronavirus over the next two months is vital to ensure this event will still attract international visitors and achieve the forecasts produced pre-breakout,” added Strachan.

“While this recent coronavirus outbreak cannot yet be compared to the impact of SARS, if the coronavirus continues to spread globally over the course of 2020 its impact on tourism and economies, particularly across APAC, could be severe.” chainstoreage.com

Johnson & Johnson Launches Multi-Pronged Response to Coronavirus Global Public Health Threat

Initiating Vaccine Development and Providing Supplies of Antiviral Medicines to China for Investigational Use

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) today announced that it is mobilizing resources at its Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies to launch a multi-pronged response to the novel coronavirus (also known as 2019-nCoV or Wuhan coronavirus) outbreak. As part of this work, the Company has initiated efforts to develop a vaccine candidate against 2019-nCoV and broadly collaborate with others to screen a library of antiviral therapies. Identifying compounds with antiviral activity against 2019-nCoV may contribute to providing immediate relief to the current outbreak.

The vaccine program will leverage Janssen's AdVac® and PER.C6® technologies that provide the ability to rapidly upscale production of the optimal vaccine candidate. These are the same technologies that were used in the development and manufacturing of Janssen's investigational Ebola vaccine, which is currently deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. They were also used to construct the Company's Zika, RSV and HIV vaccine candidates. prnewswire.com

Virus Spreads to Japanese Retailers Addicted to Chinese Shoppers

For already-suffering Japanese retailers, the rapidly spreading novel coronavirus could further dent business by keeping away one of their few growing groups of patrons: Chinese shoppers.

It’s not yet clear how long the coronavirus’ impact will last, and it’s likely to be a temporary hit that Japanese retailers can bounce back from, Allen said. Some retailers such as drugstores could even benefit from the coronavirus as people scramble to buy masks and medicine.

In Tokyo’s hubs over the weekend, the most immediate impact was seen in bulk-buying of face masks. Overseas shoppers were seen buying masks in bulk in the tourist hotspot of Asakusa, while a post office in Shinjuku was filled with tourists sending masks overseas. Nonetheless, Shibuya’s iconic Scramble Crossing seemed as crowded with visitors as ever. bloomberg.com
